Prison environments are characterized by high institutional complexity and constant tension, requiring prison staff to have technical preparation, emotional balance, and the ability to interpret signals emitted by inmates. In this context, the progressive use of force is a legitimate instrument for maintaining order and security, provided it is based on the principles of legality, proportionality, and necessity. This paper discusses the importance of less-lethal weapons within prison units, highlighting the relevance of adequate training for their use. It is evident that the absence of consistent institutional policies for training and professional development exposes staff to legal and operational uncertainties, as well as compromising the effectiveness of interventions. Furthermore, the study addresses the controversies faced by agents in the exercise of their duties, especially regarding the credibility of their actions in the face of conflicting narratives. Finally, it is argued that practical experience and continuous training in the use of these instruments are fundamental to ensuring ethical and responsible conduct aligned with the preservation of human dignity, contributing to the stability of the prison environment and the protection of all those involved.
