PROFILE OF WORK ACCIDENTS WITH EXPOSURE TO BIOLOGICAL MATERIAL AMONG HEALTH PROFESSIONALS IN A MICROREGION OF BAHIA

This article analyzed the incidence and profile of occupational accidents involving exposure to biological material (AT-Bio) among healthcare professionals in the Ilhéus-Itabuna microregion of Bahia. This was a cross-sectional ecological study with a descriptive approach. The study population consisted of reported cases of AT-Bio in the Ilhéus-Itabuna microregion of Bahia state from 2015 to 2024, accessed through the DATASUS platform. During the analyzed period, 2.017 cases of AT-Bio were reported among healthcare professionals. Of these, 86,66% were female; 36,94% were aged 25 to 34 years; 54,69% were brown; 69,61% were among nursing technicians; 50,67% occurred in Itabuna; 69,91% were percutaneous; 60,63% were caused by needlestick injuries; 80,37% involved blood exposure; 71,89% wore gloves; and 70,30% of the outcomes were recorded as unknown or white. The occupational exposure profile involving biological material was characterized by nursing technicians aged between 25 and 34 years, female, of mixed race/skin color. Accidents occurred due to percutaneous injury and needlestick injuries, and blood was the most commonly involved biological material. The highest incidence occurred in the municipality of Itabuna.
