Abstract

Palliative care (PC) has become an essential strategy for improving the quality of life of patients with incurable diseases, including those admitted to Intensive Care Units (ICUs). This study aimed to analyze the role of physiotherapists in this context, identifying interventions, challenges, and impacts on care. This is a mixed-methods study conducted with 15 physiotherapists from three hospitals in Recife, using structured questionnaires and focus groups. The results indicated that the main interventions are respiratory physiotherapy, maintenance of mobility, and promotion of comfort, although there are difficulties related to continuing education and ethical decision-making. It is concluded that the role of the physiotherapist is relevant, but requires institutional policies and training to optimize care.
