Oral cancer constitutes a public health problem, presenting a high incidence and significant morbidity and mortality rate, especially when diagnosed in advanced stages. Although the oral cavity allows easy access for clinical examination, many cases are still identified late, compromising the prognosis. In this scenario, early diagnosis stands out as an essential factor for increasing survival rates and reducing functional and aesthetic sequelae resulting from the disease. This article aims to discuss the importance of early diagnosis of oral cancer and analyze the role of the dentist in this process. To this end, a literature review was conducted based on books, scientific articles, and institutional documents that address the main aspects related to oral cancer, including risk factors, clinical manifestations, prevention, and professional practice. Analysis of the literature shows that dentists play a fundamental role in the prevention and early identification of suspicious oral lesions, through careful clinical examination and patient education regarding risk factors. It is concluded that continuous professional development and the adoption of preventive practices in clinical routines are indispensable strategies for reducing late diagnosis and promoting oral health.
