Abstract

Urban afforestation is essential for environmental quality and population well-being, especially in cities with hot and humid climates. In public squares, trees contribute to thermal regulation, improved air quality, and the provision of social spaces; however, the absence of inventories and systematic planning compromises the management of urban vegetation. This study aimed to map and assess the afforestation of 11 public squares in Macapá (Amapá, Brazil), between September 24 and December 18, 2025, considering tree composition, the conservation status of species, and users’ perceptions. The research involved field surveys, photographic records, qualitative assessment of phytosanitary conditions, georeferencing of individuals, and the application of questionnaires. The results indicated that the main benefits associated with trees were the provision of shade (35.5%), aesthetics (22.6%), and improved air quality (22.6%). Dissatisfaction was observed regarding tree density, classified as insufficient or regular by 66.7% of participants, in addition to negative evaluations of public management by 75% of the sample. Therefore, the conservation and continuous management of the existing urban tree heritage are as relevant as its expansion, constituting an essential strategy for urban sustainability in Macapá.
