Food irradiation is a modern technique that uses ionizing radiation in safe and controlled doses to eliminate micro-organisms, extend shelf life, and ensure product safety. In Brazil, this practice has gained importance for contributing to the reduction of food loss and for offering safer and longer-lasting products to the population. Despite its proven benefits, the use of irradiation is still not widespread in the country, either due to public unfamiliarity with the technology or structural limitations within the production sector. This article aims to present an overview of the application of food irradiation in Brazil, explaining its principles, advantages, challenges, and future perspectives. The research was conducted through a literature review of national and international sources, analyzing data from official agencies and recent studies. This work is expected to contribute to the dissemination of knowledge about this technology and encourage its use as a tool to promote food safety and sustainabilidade.
