Tooth whitening is one of the most sought-after aesthetic rocedures in contemporary dentistry, providing effective and minimally invasive results in improving smile aesthetics. However, post-whitening tooth sensitivity is one of the main reported adverse effects, potentially compromising patient comfort and adherence to treatment. This study aims to analyze, through a narrative literature review, the relationship between tooth whitening and tooth sensitivity, addressing the physiological mechanisms, types of whitening agents, application methods, and therapeutic strategies for controlling hypersensitivity. It concludes that, although tooth sensitivity is a frequent occurrence, it is generally transient and controllable through the application of appropriate protocols. The clinical success of whitening therefore depends on the individualization of treatment and the adoption of preventive measures that guarantee aesthetic efficacy, biological safety, and patient comfort.
