This study provides an in-depth analysis of the use of medicinal plants as a complementary approach for managing diabetes mellitus, emphasizing evidence regarding efficacy, safety, and mechanisms of action described in recent scientific literature. The review identifies widely investigated species such as Gymnema sylvestre, Momordica charantia, garlic, and cinnamon, highlighting their hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic, and antioxidant properties. A critical synthesis of the findings indicates that these plants may support glycemic modulation, reduce insulin resistance, and help prevent metabolic complications, provided they are used cautiously and under professional guidance. The study also discusses challenges related to extract standardization, phytochemical variability, and the need for robust clinical trials to consolidate the therapeutic safety and applicability of these species. The methodology consisted of a systematic literature review, covering clinical and experimental studies published in recent years. The results reinforce the potential of integrative practices in healthcare and underscore the importance of multidisciplinary investigations that broaden scientific knowledge regarding the rational use of medicinal plants in the care of individuals with diabetes mellitus.
