This article aims to investigate several occurrences of Greek mystical elements in Plato’s Symposium. It argues that the philosopher consciously employs the vocabulary and imagery of mystery religion to make his reflection on love more accessible and persuasive to the Athenian reader. Based on the analysis of passages involving ascetic practices, intermediate figures, initiatory metaphors, and the trajectory of the scala amoris (the “ladder of love”), the article argues that Plato uses such resources not to endorse mystical doctrines, but to reinforce his philosophical and educational project by giving symbolic depth to his reflection on Eros. The article also discusses some contemporary interpretations that situate the use of mystical imagery as a rhetorical and pedagogical strategy intended to broaden the understanding of Platonic reflections and enhance the argumentative effectiveness of the dialogue.
