Abstract

Tooth whitening is one of the most widely performed aesthetic procedures in contemporary dentistry, driven by the increasing demand for a whiter and more harmonious smile. However, tooth hypersensitivity resulting from the use of bleaching agents remains one of the main clinical challenges, requiring effective strategies to minimize patient discomfort. This article presents a reflection based on a narrative literature review on desensitizing techniques associated with dental bleaching and the mechanisms of action of the gels used. The analysis showed that post-bleaching sensitivity is influenced by factors such as the concentration of the bleaching agent, exposure time, and individual patient characteristics. Furthermore, it was identified that the use of desensitizing agents can significantly reduce pain, improving treatment adherence and contributing to a more conservative and minimally invasive dentistry. Considering the growing popularity of tooth whitening and the impact that sensitivity has on the patient experience, understanding and applying evidence-based techniques is essential to ensure efficacy, safety, and comfort during the procedure.
