Introduction: The postpartum period is a time of high vulnerability to women's health, especially when associated with pathological complications that can compromise their physical integrity and well-being. Objective: To understand, based on scientific evidence, the role of the nurse in identifying and managing complications of the pathological postpartum period. Methods: This research is a literature review organized sequentially to facilitate understanding. Based on a research question, relevant scientific sources were selected using search terms in databases such as SciELO, PubMed, and Google Scholar, between March and August 2025. Inclusion criteria considered articles published in the last five years, available in Portuguese or English, and directly addressing the topic. Initially, 150 studies were found, but only 11 met the criteria and were analyzed according to the PRISMA method. Results and discussion: The 11 scientific articles analyzed in the research show that nursing professionals recognize the importance of a humanized, preventive, and comprehensive approach to care, but face difficulties in implementing processes, identifying psychological disorders, and applying protocols due to a lack of adequate training, tools, and resources. Conclusion: In conclusion, the nurse's role in pathological postpartum care is fundamental, especially in the early identification of warning signs and the management of complications. Furthermore, strategies such as prenatal care, psychological support, and community outreach are considered essential for providing more effective, humane, and preventative care, helping to reduce physical and mental complications during the postpartum period.
