This study aimed to analyze the importance of physical therapy in preventing falls in the elderly, highlighting its benefits in reducing risks and promoting quality of life. This is an integrative literature review, descriptive and exploratory in nature, with a qualitative approach. The search was carried out in the Virtual Health Library, after applying the selection criteria, 652 studies were initially found, of which 16 met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed. The results indicate that aging causes physiological changes such as sarcopenia, loss of balance and decreased bone density, factors that increase vulnerability to falls. Physical therapy stands out as an effective strategy when acting with muscle strengthening exercises, balance training, postural re-education and guidelines for adaptations in the home environment. It is concluded that preventive physical therapy is essential to preserve the autonomy and safety of the elderly, in addition to reducing the incidence of falls and their consequences. Thus, the inclusion of personalized physical therapy programs in public health policies is essential to ensure healthier, more active and dignified aging.
