MOMMY’S TREASURE: PARENTAL OVERPROTECTION AS A VIOLATION OF THE PERSONALITY RIGHTS OF CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS

Abstract

This article analyzes the impacts of overparenting – or parental overprotection – on the personality rights of children and adolescents. Using a qualitative, exploratory, and bibliographic-narrative approach, the study investigates how excessively controlling parenting practices, even when motivated by good intentions, can hinder the development of autonomy, self-esteem, and identity in young individuals. Considering the comprehensive protection established by the Brazilian legal framework, the article discusses how overprotection may constitute a subtle form of violation of the dignity of children and adolescents. In addition to the theoretical foundation, the cultural representation of the relationship between Dona Florinda and Kiko, from the TV show El Chavo del Ocho, is used as a symbolic illustration of the effects of excessive parental zeal. The study concludes that balancing care and autonomy is essential to ensuring the full exercise of personality rights and the healthy development of these individuals in formation.
