Abstract

Introduction: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative and multifactorial disease, with aging not being the only trigger, but also being caused by other clinical conditions. Patients diagnosed with AD suffer from memory lapses and emotional and social difficulties that impact their quality of life. Nursing professionals play a fundamental role in their care, which extends beyond medication administration. Methodology: This study aims to analyze information based on studies selected from the LILACS, BDENF, and SciELO databases. The same descriptors were applied using the Boolean operator "AND": "Alzheimer's disease and nursing," "Alzheimer's disease and the role of the nursing professional," and "Alzheimer's disease and nurses." Studies that fit the theme of broadening the understanding of the role of nurses in caring for patients with Alzheimer's disease were selected. Results and discussion: Population aging has increased the incidence of Alzheimer's disease, a progressive illness that compromises the cognitive, functional, and social functions of older adults, leading to their dependence on care. Characterized as the leading cause of dementia, it presents risk factors related to age, genetic predisposition, and lifestyle, and its progression can be slowed through cognitive stimulation and changes in health habits. Early diagnosis is essential, as is the role of nurses, who play a central role in guiding family members and caregivers, planning and supervising care, using communication strategies adapted to each stage of the disease, and promoting quality of life. In addition to reducing complications and supporting the care network, nursing contributes to preserving the dignity of older adults, in line with the legal principles that guarantee their fundamental rights. Conclusion: Nursing plays an essential role in the care of older adults with Alzheimer's, working in early detection, disease management, and family support, aiming for quality of life and dignity.
