Abstract

This article aimed to analyze the benefits of the Kangaroo Mother Care in improving the health of premature babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Methodology: This is an integrative literature review that searched databases for articles published between 2020 and 2024, using the descriptors "Kangaroo Mother Care," "Premature," and "Neonatal Nursing." Seventeen free articles in Portuguese that addressed the topic in full were selected for the study. Main Results: The review results highlight the importance of qualified nursing for the successful implementation of the Kangaroo Mother Care, even in the face of healthcare system challenges. Nursing care, which directly contributes to the method's success, is crucial to ensuring the safety and well-being of the newborn and their family. Furthermore, the study showed that training healthcare professionals is essential to promoting a more complete and safe recovery. CONCLUSION: In summary, the Kangaroo Method is an essential intervention in the NICU to improve the prognosis of premature babies, strengthen family bonds, and encourage breastfeeding. Its effectiveness and success depend directly on qualified and humanized nursing. Ongoing professional training is crucial to ensure that newborns receive the care necessary for a full and safe recovery.
