This study aims to conduct a literature review on the relevance of smoking cessation in individuals with COPD, with an emphasis on improving quality of life. The research was based on the analysis of scientific articles published in recent years in the PubMed and BVS databases. Studies that addressed the association between smoking and COPD progression, as well as the benefits of quitting, were selected. The literature analyzed demonstrates that smoking cessation reduces the rate of COPD progression, reduces the incidence of exacerbations, and improves respiratory symptoms. Therefore, strategies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, pharmacotherapy, and motivational support have proven effective in the smoking cessation process. Smoking cessation is a fundamental element in the clinical management of COPD, representing an indispensable strategy for slowing the progression of the disease, minimizing complications, and improving patients' quality of life.
