The pharmacist plays an essential role in the dispensing of medications in hospital pharmacies, being responsible for ensuring the correct distribution and rational use of drugs, which directly impacts patient safety (SANTOS et al., 2023). Their role involves not only the delivery of medications but also pharmacotherapeutic monitoring, identification of potential drug interactions, and prevention of adverse events, contributing to treatment efficacy (LIMA et al., 2023).Moreover, the integration of pharmacists into multidisciplinary teams promotes the reduction of medication errors and improves clinical outcomes, reflecting higher quality in hospital care (BARROS et al., 2022). Brazilian regulatory standards, such as Resolution No. 585/2013 of the Federal Pharmacy Council, consolidate the clinical role of the pharmacist, reinforcing their importance in the management and guidance of medication use (BRASIL, 2013). Case studies, such as the one conducted at Hospital Metropolitano Dom José Maria Pires, highlight the practical benefits of pharmacist intervention, including resource savings and risk minimization for patients (CFF, 2024). These results demonstrate that pharmacists are key agents for the sustainability of healthcare services while ensuring the safety of medication use (SANTOS et al., 2023).However, the profession faces significant challenges, such as the shortage of qualified professionals, the need for better infrastructure, and resistance to full integration of pharmacists into healthcare teams (MARTINS; ALMEIDA; SOUZA, 2022). To overcome these barriers, it is essential to invest in continuous training, professional valuation, and policies that strengthen the role of hospital pharmacists (LIMA et al., 2023).This article analyzes the pharmacist’s role in medication dispensing in hospital pharmacies, highlighting their legal responsibilities, clinical and economic contributions, as well as the challenges faced, aiming to promote reflection on the importance of their work for the quality and safety of pharmaceutical care in hospital settings (SANTOS et al., 2023).
