Abstract

Introduction: Airway obstruction by foreign bodies (AOFB) is one of the leading causes of accidental death in children, especially those under five years old. This type of accident is common due to the tendency of young children to put objects in their mouths, which can lead to the inhalation of foreign bodies and partial or complete airway obstruction. Objective: The general objective of this study is to investigate the fundamental role of nursing in preventing accidents related to airway obstruction by foreign bodies (AOFB) in children, while highlighting the importance of continuing education as a strategy to empower parents, caregivers, and educators to act correctly and effectively in emergency situations. Methodology: This study is a descriptive literature review with a qualitative approach, aimed at analyzing relevant scientific literature related to the research topic. Analysis and discussion of results: After inspecting and interpreting the data collected from the articles cited in this review, the following categories were formed: (I) Strategic actions for preventing childhood accidents related to airway obstruction; (II) The role of nurses in preventing airway obstruction by foreign bodies in children; and (III) The importance of continuing education in preventing childhood accidents related to airway obstruction. Conclusion: Based on the analysis of previously published material and with the aim of studying different perspectives on the topic of airway obstruction by foreign bodies (AOFB) in children, it can be concluded that prevention and early intervention are essential to avoid serious and fatal outcomes.
