PROFILE OF PATIENTS HOSPITALIZED WITH PROSTATE CANCER IN THE STATE OF PARANÁ, FROM 2014 TO 2024

Abstract

Introduction: Prostate cancer has been one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among men in Brazil, especially in older age groups. Understanding its impact on the healthcare system, considering regional and sociodemographic aspects, is essential for public policy planning. Objectives: This study analyzed the profile of hospitalizations for malignant prostate neoplasms in the state of Paraná between 2014 and 2024, focusing on geographic distribution, race/skin color, age group, costs, and temporal trends. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study based on secondary data extracted from DATASUS. Information regarding the number of hospitalizations, average and total costs, as well as sociodemographic characteristics of patients treated in different health macro-regions of the state, was evaluated. Conclusion: Most hospitalizations were concentrated in the Eastern macro-region, reflecting the centralization of oncology services. There was a predominance of white and elderly patients, as well as a progressive increase in hospitalizations over the years, with a drop only in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Variations in costs and regional coverage highlight inequalities in access to treatment. The findings reinforce the need for public policies that expand access, improve regional equity, and encourage early diagnosis of prostate cancer.
