Mood disorders, such as major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder, cause severe and persistent emotional changes, significantly compromising quality of life and leading to high morbidity and mortality rates. This study aimed to identify the epidemiological profile of hospital morbidity due to these disorders in the state of Paraná, Brazil, between 2017 and 2024. Using data from the Tabnet/DATASUS platform, the research adopted a retrospective descriptive methodology, analyzing variables such as sex, age group, race/ethnicity, and type of hospital admission. The results showed a predominance of hospitalizations among women (65% to 67%), especially in the 30 to 49 age group. A drop in hospitalizations was observed in 2020, likely related to the COVID-19 pandemic, followed by an increase in 2024. Most admissions were urgent, and the white population accounted for the highest number of hospitalizations, reflecting the ethnic composition of the state. The study concludes that the pandemic significantly impacted mental health services, affecting care for patients with mood disorders. It reinforces the need to strengthen community-based services and improve the integration of mental health with primary care, aiming to reduce psychiatric hospitalizations and promote more effective clinical management.
