Abstract

This article aims to discuss the Maternal mortality is an important health indicator that reflects the quality and effectiveness of women's healthcare services in Brazil. Despite advances in obstetric care, it remains a public health challenge, associated with pre-obstetric, obstetric, and post-obstetric causes. Objective: to analyze the relationship between maternal mortality and factors directly linked to the structure and functioning of the Brazilian healthcare system over the years. Methodology: this is a literature review study, with a systematic approach, based on a critical analysis of recent scientific publications on the topic. Results: a reduction in maternal mortality rates was observed in Brazil in 2024 compared to previous years, possibly related to specific improvements in healthcare services and public policies aimed at maternal care. Conclusion: although recent data indicate a downward trend, maternal mortality in Brazil still requires continuous efforts in the qualification of prenatal care, access to emergency obstetric services, and the strengthening of public policies focused on women's health.
