Abstract

This article consists of a master's research project that explores the daily integration of students with autism into conventional classrooms and the reverberations of the diagnosis on the family and society. The qualitative research investigates how teachers, school principals, classmates, society and family members perceive the inclusion of these students in diverse spaces. The focus is particularly on families, due to the significant impact of the autism diagnosis on the family structure, including changes such as marital separations and career adjustments, especially among mothers who are often forced to quit their jobs when they cannot find suitable caregivers for their children. In addition, family members often experience ambivalent feelings about having a child with autism. The research seeks to highlight the often unrealized expectation of normalization and cure through education, which can cause frustration among parents, especially when compared to the experiences of other children.
