This article presents reflections based on an internship carried out at a Psychosocial Support Center, through participant observation and interaction with residents with moderate to severe mental disorders. Aspects of the institutional routine, subjective experiences of residents and challenges related to autonomy, sexuality, humanized care and social bonds are reported. Based on the narratives, tensions between inclusion practices and remnants of asylum models that are still present, even under the framework of the Psychiatric Reform, are highlighted. Based on Michel Foucault and other authors, the importance of sensitive listening, respect for singularity and guaranteeing rights is discussed, highlighting the urgency of public policies that promote care in freedom and combat the stigma that falls on bodies considered “crazy”.
