Monitoring is an indispensable component of biodiversity conservation strategies and presents significant challenges, as it requires the definition of parameters known as indicators, as well as their reference values, which must be continuously assessed. Biodiversity monitoring indicators should provide relevant information about ecosystem health and biodiversity trends, with the ability to describe the current state or response to anthropogenic or natural pressure factors. Parameterizing and tracking pressure points, the current status, and conservation actions enhances the effectiveness of monitoring efforts. Accordingly, the objective of this study was to collaboratively establish a set of biodiversity monitoring indicators, framed within the thematic dimensions of the Pressure-State-Response (PSR) model, in the territorial context of the state of Pernambuco, Northeastern Brazil. At the end of the process of identification, refinement, and validation, 22 biodiversity monitoring indicators were selected, and a multidisciplinary committee of experts with broad knowledge in six strategic areas for biodiversity monitoring within the study area was formally established.
