This article sought to show that reading and writing are among the most important tasks in school, becoming the privileged space for this learning. In the first year of elementary school, children are expected to acquire the basic strategies to understand and express themselves in common situations of written communication. It is important to stimulate curiosity, the need and interest in doing so, so that they can value learning as essential tools for functioning in everyday life. Teachers should encourage interaction between students and exposure to different written materials so that they discover the characteristics of the writing system and its use as a resource for better social development. They should also create learning situations that encourage children to reflect on ways to take advantage of it.
