Abstract

This research aims to discuss the application of botulinum toxin for aesthetic purposes, being one of the most performed procedures worldwide, with Brazil standing out as a leading country in this field. In Brazil, professionals such as physicians, dentists, nurses, biomedical scientists, and pharmacists are authorized to work with biological substances, provided they meet the requirements set by their respective professional councils. However, the application of botulinum toxin can lead to complications, especially if not performed with the correct technique. For this reason, the present study investigates the role of pharmacists in the administration of botulinum toxin, focusing on treatment efficacy and patient safety. The research problem to be addressed is: "How can the pharmacist contribute to the process of administering botulinum toxin in aesthetic procedures?" The general objective is to analyze the growing role of aesthetic pharmacists in Brazil. The specific objectives are to present the regulations governing the pharmacist’s practice in aesthetics, identify the competencies required for the application of botulinum toxin, explain its mechanism of action, and describe its main therapeutic and aesthetic uses. The methodology involves bibliographic and documentary research, addressing aspects such as the role of aesthetic pharmacists in Brazil, the mechanism of action of botulinum toxin, its therapeutic and aesthetic applications, as well as the complications and risks associated with its use. Finally, the results of this study contribute to highlighting the continuous need for professional development, ensuring safety and efficacy in aesthetic procedures, and emphasizing the importance of an interdisciplinary approach in providing patient care.
