The Au Pair program, aimed at young individuals between the ages of 18 and 26, is one of the most accessible cultural exchange options, sending numerous participants to the United States each year to work in childcare while experiencing a new culture under the J-1 visa. However, the reality of this cultural exchange often differs significantly from what is presented by exchange agencies. Despite many positive reports, numerous au pairs face violations of labor rights and, more critically, human rights. The lack of oversight and regulation for this group results in precarious working conditions, including long hours, inadequate compensation, non-compliance with program regulations by host families, and limited legal protection. This study aims to delve into the lived experiences of these exchange participants, analyzing the gap between the expectations set by agencies and the actual conditions encountered. It seeks to propose pathways toward fairer regulation that upholds the dignity and rights of au pairs.
