Abstract

Introduction: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disease that compromises glucose metabolism, resulting in complications in several organs. Among the most frequent consequences, the formation of wounds stands out, whose healing is generally difficult, with the feet being particularly vulnerable. In this context, nurses play an essential role in primary care, with an emphasis on health education for patients with DM and specific care related to diabetic wounds. Objective: To analyze the role of nurses in the healing of diabetic wounds in Primary Health Care. Methodology: This was an integrative literature review, with a qualitative approach. In view of this, the following guiding question was formulated: What was the role of nurses in the healing of diabetic wounds in Primary Health Care? Data collection was performed through the VHL, using scientific databases SciELO, LILACS and BDENF. The descriptors used were “Diabetes Mellitus”, “Nursing Care”, “Primary Care” and “Diabetic Foot”, combined by the Boolean operator AND. The inclusion criteria were: articles published between 2019 and 2024, available in full in Portuguese, English or Spanish, and that addressed nursing care for diabetic patients. The exclusion criteria included case reports, experience reports, literature reviews, theses, monographs and studies outside the theme. After screening, the articles were initially evaluated by titles and abstracts. The selected articles were read in full to compose the study results. The classification was made through a table. Results: Nurses in Primary Health Care (PHC) play a fundamental role in the early detection of diabetes complications, especially foot wounds, performing risk assessments, sensitivity tests and providing guidance on daily care. In addition to applying dressings and monitoring the evolution of lesions, nurses promote self-care and educational activities, such as lectures and home visits, to raise awareness about glycemic control and ulcer prevention. Their work also involves planning ongoing care, providing emotional support and providing appropriate referrals, promoting a therapeutic bond that strengthens adherence to treatment and improves clinical outcomes. Conclusion: Nurses play a crucial role in the healing of diabetic wounds in Primary Health Care, going beyond dressings by performing assessments, identifying risks and planning individualized care. Through nursing consultations, health education and strengthening self-care, nurses contribute to the prevention of complications and diabetes control. The bond with the patient and a humanized approach are essential to ensure adherence to treatment and continuity of care, promoting health and quality of life.
