Introduction: Complete dental prostheses are important for oral and psychosocial rehabilitation, especially in Brazil, where tooth loss is high. Data show that in 2010, among adults and the elderly, there was a tooth loss rate of almost 45% and 92% of teeth, respectively. Complete prostheses can be: mucosa-supported, made of resin and supported by mucosa, and implant-supported, which are fixed by metal implants. Objective: This study aims to conduct a literature review comparing mucosa-supported and implant-supported total prostheses, regarding masticatory function, comfort and quality of life. Methodology: An electronic search was carried out in the Capes, PubMed and Scielo databases, using a combination of the descriptors: "Dental implants", "dental prosthesis" and "total prosthesis" and the books present in the virtual library of UNIFAESF, without language restrictions. Results: Overall, 2484 citations were found. After eliminating duplicates, 1251 citations were maintained. After reading the available titles and abstracts, inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied and 602 articles were removed, 613 of which were also excluded because they were not structurally complete. After this selection, 18 articles and one book published over a period of 19 years (2005 to 2024) were used for this review. Final Considerations: According to the studies evaluated, the implant-supported prosthesis is the one that presents the best function, comfort and promotes a better quality of life for the patient. However, both types of total dentures: muco-supported and implant-supported have advantages and disadvantages. What will define the type of prosthesis that will be made are the factors of the patient's general physical health, the remaining ridge, the financial condition and the patient's compatibility with the prosthesis.
