THE EFFECTIVENESS OF REMISSION THROUGH STUDY

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of sentence reduction through education in the Brazilian prison system, in light of current legislation and previously published academic studies. Remission through education consists of a legal benefit that allows prisoners to reduce their sentence upon proof of educational activities. The research was conducted through a bibliographic review, based on books, scientific articles and legislation, seeking to understand whether, in practice, the right to remission through education is being duly ensured and whether it contributes to the reintegration of prisoners into society. The results indicate that, although it is an important advance, there are still structural, political and social challenges that hinder its full implementation.
