Motherhood remains a key factor in shaping women’s professional trajectories, reflecting the persistent gender inequalities in the Brazilian labor market. This study investigates the research problem: how does motherhood, combined with the burden of the double shift and the absence of effective public policies, negatively affect women's professional careers? The general objective is to analyze the impacts of motherhood on women's professional lives, focusing on the challenges of balancing work and family responsibilities. The specific objectives include: investigating the effects of the double shift on the physical and emotional health and productivity of working mothers; examining public and corporate policies that can mitigate the negative effects of motherhood on women's careers; and analyzing the importance of the “Emprega Mais Mulheres” (Employ More Women) Program in addressing the challenges of parenting and task organization. A qualitative methodology was adopted, based on bibliographic research involving established authors and official documents, such as laws and institutional programs. The theoretical framework includes studies on gender inequality, labor market dynamics, and public policy. The findings indicate that despite legislative advances, the unequal division of domestic labor and the social perception of women as primary caregivers continue to hinder their career advancement. The study concludes that programs like “Emprega Mais Mulheres” are essential for creating a more inclusive and equitable work environment. However, deeper structural changes are needed to promote shared parenting responsibilities and to recognize reproductive labor as fundamental to economic and social development.
