The desire to cook meals for pets has gained popularity in recent years. The reasons pet owners have shown interest in a more homemade diet stem from the idea of using fresh, organic ingredients without chemical additives, and providing a varied diet every day. The objectives of this study were to identify the best ways to introduce natural food to allergic dogs, differentiate the nutritional and physiological benefits associated with this dietary choice as a form of treatment, and propose specific nutritional recommendations based on the dog’s life stage (puppies, adults, and seniors), considering the particularities of each animal. The methods used for gathering information for this article were through research conducted by the group in both English and Portuguese, focusing on articles, books, and academic veterinary websites from the past 10 years regarding the importance of natural food in the diet of animals with food allergies and its nutritional benefits. The main positive results observed in the introduction of natural food in cases of food hypersensitivity included more efficient digestion, better nutrient absorption, and it being a good option for allergic animals. However, it is important to always emphasize the risks of nutritional imbalances when done without professional guidance. Throughout this work, we stressed the need for a qualified professional to create an appropriate diet for each animal and its specific needs. It was concluded that a therapy based on natural food proved to be an excellent approach for an elimination diet, carefully selecting which foods should be removed and which should be added, aiming at the exclusion of identified allergens, thus improving the quality of life for these animals.
