MENTORING IN MEDICAL RESIDENCY: BENEFITS, BARRIERS, AND STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVEMENT

Abstract

This article aims to review the literature on the benefits of mentorship in medical residency, identify barriers to its implementation, and propose strategies to optimize its effectiveness. Mentorship has become an essential educational strategy in medical residency, providing academic, professional, and emotional support to residents. Methods: An integrative literature review was conducted using LILACS and MEDLINE with the descriptors “mentoring” OR “mentorship” AND “medical residency.” Articles published in the last five years in English, Portuguese, or Spanish were included. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, seven studies were selected for detailed analysis. Results and discussion: The findings indicate that mentorship contributes to academic and professional development while improving residents' quality of life by reducing burnout and strengthening their sense of belonging. However, the lack of formal structure, difficulties in workload management, and absence of continuous evaluations hinder its effectiveness. Strategies such as longitudinal mentorship programs, clear institutional role definitions, and protected time allocation for mentors can help overcome these challenges. Conclusion: Mentorship is a valuable tool in medical residency, yet its implementation still faces structural barriers. Establishing well-organized, evidence-based mentorship models can optimize its benefits and ensure greater program sustainability.
