Introduction: Chronic renal failure is a deficiency of the kidneys, characterized by the progressive and irreversible reduction of renal function, and can manifest itself through changes in urinary frequency and urine production, edema and arterial hypertension. This study aimed to identify in the literature the role of nurses in the care of patients with chronic kidney disease awaiting kidney transplantation, the aspects that influence the lives of patients with chronic kidney disease and the impact on their survival. Methodology: this is an integrative literature review based on bibliographic research, which is a method that allows the gathering of scientific productions on the subject, carried out from the survey of theoretical references published between 2019 and 2024. Through the SciELO, PUBMED and BDENF databases, in addition to manuals from the Ministry of Health. Results and discussions: it was possible to verify that the nurse plays a crucial role in providing preventive, educational and practical interventions in the care of patients with CKD, such as assessment and monitoring, education on medications, lifestyle, hygiene and counseling, coordination of care with the health team, monitoring treatment and signs of complications, in addition to emotional support for the patient and family. Conclusion: the nurse monitors the patient, provides guidance on medication and healthy habits, coordinates care with the team, identifies complications and offers emotional support, encouraging self-care and adherence to treatment.
