Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the role of collaborative learning in virtual learning environments, focusing on the relationship between cooperation and student engagement. The research was developed in a bibliographical manner, analyzing works by authors who discuss the use of technologies and collaborative methodologies in distance learning. The problem addressed was the need to understand how collaborative learning can be effectively integrated into digital platforms, promoting greater cooperation and engagement among students. During the development, it was identified that collaborative learning, when applied in digital environments, has the potential to increase student engagement, mainly by stimulating interaction and group work. It was also observed that the success of this methodology depends on the adequate planning of activities and the role of the educator as a facilitator. The final considerations indicated that collaboration among students, mediated by technologies, contributes to the development of social and cognitive skills, being essential for the formation of critical citizens prepared for the job market. However, the research indicated the need for complementary studies that explore specific challenges and diverse contexts, expanding the understanding of the application of collaborative learning in different educational modalities.
