This article sought to discuss education in the penitentiary system, which must be given priority attention by those responsible for administering prisons in the states, since education provides many inmates living in prison with a means of occupation and training, and education is one of the main mechanisms for reintegration into society. The objective was to include programs ranging from literacy to professional training in the prison system, assisting in rehabilitation, where they develop skills, learn work techniques that are often professional, and provide these people with an opportunity to have a source of income, thus reducing the possibility of reoffending. The methodology adopted was a qualitative review of literature, of materials already prepared on the prison system, education programs in penitentiaries and their reintegration into society. It was highlighted that the educational level of people in the prison system is very low, and many of them did not have the opportunity to complete basic education or learn to read and write. Therefore, their chances of getting a job after serving their sentences are slim, as they have a criminal record and are not qualified for the job market. By denying education to people in prison, states violate these rights and the principle of human dignity. When people are incarcerated, they are already being deprived of social interaction and many have not had the opportunity or chance to study. Perhaps the time they spend in prison will not develop values in these people that were hidden in the world of crime. Educational programs can prepare inmates for social interaction by showing them a path other than crime.
