Abstract

This article aimed to review acute intoxications, focusing on the main causes, diagnosis, and emergency management. The methodology employed was a bibliographic review of recent studies on treatment protocols and intervention strategies for intoxications caused by medications, chemicals, and illicit substances. The research revealed that acute intoxications account for a significant number of hospitalizations and deaths, particularly among vulnerable populations. The management of these conditions requires a rapid response, emphasizing the importance of basic and advanced life support protocols, which have shown positive results in reducing mortality. However, the lack of training for healthcare professionals and the scarcity of resources in some regions still represent significant challenges. The conclusions indicate that to improve the treatment of acute intoxications, it is essential to invest in training for professionals and the implementation of standardized care protocols, as well as promoting proper access to health facilities equipped for severe cases.
