Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyze how the decision of the Supreme Federal Court to decriminalize the possession of marijuana for personal use, as well as the existing policies to combat drug trafficking, impact the work of the Military Police. This is a descriptive review of the literature through consultations of previously published materials on the subject, starting from a general premise to a specific one, responding to the problem raised and fulfilling the proposed objective. From the entire context involving the decriminalization of marijuana, consequences will be evident in the area of health and, mainly, public safety, directly impacting frontline agents, such as military police officers, directly in the fight against drug trafficking, in the demand for possession of drugs for personal use, as well as the crimes resulting from these, such as property crimes. It is essential that this decision be accompanied by the support of the Federation for the States in order to strengthen Public Security in terms of more effective policies, with optimization of the state police, since it is known that decriminalization leads to a significant increase in conduct, potentially throughout the supply chain, which will require safer and more effective police intervention. The State must take actions to guarantee the tranquility, security and protection of the physical and moral integrity of the population, through surveillance, prevention of criminal acts and citizen guidance provided by the police force and civil protection committees for the community as a whole.
