This study aimed to analyze the Brazilian Income Tax (IR), focusing on its social, economic, and legal impacts, as well as the penalties associated with non-compliance or errors in the declaration process. The research sought to understand how the IR serves as a redistributive mechanism and the consequences for taxpayers who fail to meet their fiscal obligations. The methodology adopted was qualitative, employing a survey that addressed topics such as knowledge of IR, utilization of tax benefits, and experiences with penalties. The results showed that most taxpayers lack comprehensive knowledge of IR, with many failing to utilize available tax benefits such as deductions and refunds. Additionally, it was evident that penalties, such as fines and CPF blockages, directly affect individuals' financial and administrative lives. The study concludes that financial education is crucial for improving compliance with tax obligations, highlighting the need for strategies that promote awareness and simplify the declaration process. Proposed solutions include the creation of educational programs on IR and the use of digital platforms to facilitate understanding and adherence to the tax system, thereby promoting greater equity and fiscal justice.
