This article reports on a study that investigated the relationship between informal work and social security. The study used the hypothetical-deductive method with a quantitative, exploratory and theoretical research approach. The discussion focuses on identifying the impacts of the increase in the informality rate on social security funding and public accounts. To this end, the research was divided into three parts: the first part analyzed the concept of the informal worker and the causes of the increase in this type of worker; the second part looked at the classification of insured workers and the forms of contribution, covering the disadvantage of pejotização for funding, and finally, the third part presented the consequences of the non-contribution of informal workers for public accounts and access to social security benefits. The results obtained indicate that, while the informality rate increases, social security collection decreases, negatively impacting public accounts, thus requiring further social security reforms, which will reduce the social security benefits earned in order for the system to survive.
