This article aimed to identify the importance of hand hygiene as a good practice for the prevention and control of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). This study adopted an exploratory literature review methodology, using Google Scholar and the Virtual Health Library (VHL) as the main research sources. The influence of the hospital environment as a source of microorganisms has been studied especially in recent decades, highlighting its secondary importance as a cause of HAIs, including respiratory, urinary, and bloodstream infections, particularly in immunocompromised patients. Nurses are seen as key players in Hospital Infection Control actions within institutions, which represents a significant responsibility for those working in infection control services. Therefore, the role of nurses is vital for the prevention and control of HAIs, and continuing education stands out as a fundamental strategy to improve health practices and ensure patient safety.
