Global population aging affects health systems, public policies, and family structures, increasing the proportion of elderly individuals and requiring a focus on their health and well-being. Geriatric syndromes such as frailty and dementia reduce the quality of life of elderly individuals. Nurses are essential in early detection, interventions, and education, despite challenges such as lack of protocols and resources. A literature review approach was chosen in this study to investigate the role of nurses in assisting elderly patients, considering the growing relevance of this topic in nursing practice. Geriatric syndromes such as falls, frailty, urinary incontinence, dementia, and depression seriously impact the functionality and autonomy of elderly individuals, increasing their dependence and compromising their quality of life. Nurses play a crucial role in the early identification, prevention, and management of these conditions, using comprehensive assessments and promoting personalized interventions. Environmental adaptation, continuous training, and multidisciplinary strategies are essential to mitigate risks, preserve independence, and provide humanized care that integrates physical, cognitive, and emotional well-being. Given the above, it is clear that caring for the elderly requires a multidisciplinary approach and a deep understanding of geriatric syndromes.
