Self-medication with antibiotics is on the rise, posing a serious public health risk and contributing to antimicrobial resistance, as warned by the World Health Organization (WHO). The lack of health education, exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic, has allowed antibiotics to be used without scientific evidence, leading to inappropriate usage. The easy access to these medications without a prescription, due to insufficient regulation and online sales, is a factor that exacerbates self-medication. In Brazil, in areas with few health services, this practice has become common, with people buying antibiotics without professional guidance. The consequences include an increase in bacterial resistance, making common infections more difficult to treat and requiring more potent antibiotics. The WHO warns about the risk of simple infections becoming fatal. Pharmaceutical care is crucial in preventing issues related to medication use, with pharmacists playing a role in evaluating and advising on prescriptions. Educational campaigns and collaboration among healthcare professionals are essential to promote the responsible use of antibiotics, combating resistance and protecting the effectiveness of these treatments in the future.
