Abstract

Breastfeeding is widely recognized as essential for promoting both child and maternal health and is recommended by the WHO and the Ministry of Health as an exclusive practice during the first six months of life. This study aimed to analyze the nurse's role in promoting breastfeeding, highlighting its benefits for both the baby and the mother. The specific objectives included understanding the physiological foundations of breastfeeding, analyzing public policies for its promotion, and identifying nursing practices related to the topic. The methodology adopted was a qualitative literature review with defined inclusion and exclusion criteria to select recent and relevant publications. A total of 30 studies published between 2016 and 2024 were analyzed. The results demonstrated that breast milk offers unique benefits, including immune protection, promotion of mother-child bonding, and reduction of chronic disease risks in both the baby and the mother. Nurses' roles proved crucial in providing guidance and support to mothers, from prenatal care to postpartum, contributing to breastfeeding success and reducing early weaning. Public policies, such as the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative and Human Milk Banks, were identified as fundamental in supporting these practices. It is concluded that nurses play an indispensable role in promoting breastfeeding, acting as educators, facilitators, and providers of technical and emotional support. Strengthening public policies and integrated health strategies is essential to expand the benefits of this practice and promote maternal and child health.
