Abstract

The present study shows the evolution of naval propulsion, from the use of sails on vessels, to the emergence of diesel engines. In the 20th century, mechanical propulsion dominated the scene, later, advances around power electronics contributed to the control of electric motors. Nowadays, with technological advances there are several types of propulsion systems. The use of electric propulsion, the focus of this study, has brought many advantages such as reduced fuel consumption, reduced environmental impacts, simplified design and construction, among others.  As it is a reliable power system, it enables ships to meet increasing energy demands, especially offshore support vessels.
