Prison sentences have become very prominent in Brazilian society today, considering their frequent use as a way to punish the offender. However, their purpose goes beyond that, exerting different impacts on the social context. In the meantime, this paper has as its theme the resocializing function of prison sentences in Brazil, as well as the way they influence Brazilian society. In view of this, the following issue stands out: Why is the effectiveness of the function of prison sentences relevant to society? Thus, this study has as its general objective to analyze the resocializing function of prison sentences and their applicability, considering that prison is no longer a complementary measure and, with the development of society, has become the main form of problem-solving. As specific objectives, we seek to understand the effects caused by prison sentences on the construction of society and the reintegration of the inmate, contextualize the structural problems and the importance of implementing resocialization, and verify alternative measures to prison and other ways to minimize the impacts on society. To this end, a descriptive study was conducted, with a qualitative approach and deductive method, through bibliographical reviews, document analysis of websites, books and articles related to the topic, analyzed at a national level. The results demonstrated that circumstances are extremely important for establishing prison sentences efficiently and reintegrating the individual into society, consequently interrupting the cycle of recidivism and promoting a reduction in the crime rate.
