Risk classification (RC) is an essential tool used by nurses to prioritize patient care in health services, such as hospitals and emergency care units. Nurses are trained to quickly assess the severity of symptoms and make crucial decisions to ensure the safety and well-being of patients. Therefore, the guiding question of this article is: How important is the risk classification performed by nurses for an emergency unit? The following study has the general objective of analyzing nurses and their way of acting in risk classification in emergency units. The specific objectives are: to conceptualize risk classification with a focus on the Manchester Protocol; to present the role of nursing professionals in triage care; to indicate how the role of nurses in RC improves emergency services (SUE). The research will be developed through bibliographic and documentary research using scientific articles found in databases such as Google Scholar, Latin American Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), the Brazilian Specialized Bibliographic Database in the Nursing Area (BDEF), Virtual Health Library (BVS) and books. The approach will be qualitative and descriptive in nature. Given the above, it can be seen that nursing professionals are the central piece when it comes to risk classification, since they are prepared from the beginning to manage sectors, deal with patients, analyze clinical symptoms, have qualified listening, among many other skills and activities.
