This article explores the intersection between psychology and religion, analyzing its historical developments and contemporary perspectives. The psychology of religion, a field that investigates the effects of religious experiences on human behavior, has its roots with thinkers such as William James and Sigmund Freud in the late 19th century. The study discusses the challenges faced by psychologists when dealing with religious patients in a predominantly religious context such as Brazil, balancing respect for spirituality with the secular principles of the profession. The methodology used is based on a review of scientific literature, integrating concepts from philosophy and theology. In addition, the article examines the role of religiosity in coping with psychological crises, as observed during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is concluded that, despite historical tensions, the integration between religion and psychology has been growing, allowing for a more comprehensive understanding of human behavior and greater effectiveness in therapeutic practice.
