The illegal export of fossils in Ceará, especially in the Araripe Basin, represents a growing problem involving the trafficking of invaluable paleontological heritage. The general objective of this work is to analyze the illegal practices of fossil extraction and exportation and identify gaps in enforcement. The specific objectives include analyzing the current legislation, evaluating the state’s actions, and understanding the consequences of fossil trafficking. The methodology adopted consists of documentary research and analysis of the legislation, emphasizing on the Paleontological Heritage Protection Law. The research problem addresses the effectiveness of protection and enforcement measures for paleontological heritage in Ceará. The results achieved demonstrate that, despite the existence of specific legislation, enforcement is insufficient, leading to the loss of valuable fossils and the degradation of heritage. The conclusion points to the urgent need to implement more robust public policies and to increase awareness of the importance of preserving this heritage, aiming to curb the illegal export of fossils and protect Brazil’s paleontological wealth.
