Abstract

Social media, increasingly used in today’s world as a means of entertainment and communication, has also become a space for the dissemination of information, including by health professionals like dietitians. However, the problematic use of these platforms directly impacts those who post and/or follow content, resulting in bullying, self-esteem issues, and eating disorders. The objective of this study was to assess the impact and consequences of misinformation related to nutrition and food on social media. This is an exploratory research study of the literature review type. Social media plays an important role in promoting ideas and products, including lifestyles and false information, and is associated with mental disorders. It also serves as an opportunity for nutritionists to debunk misinformation and promote healthy habits, an action that should be regulated by the Nutritionist’s Code of Ethics and Conduct (CECN). Body dissatisfaction and the development of eating and psychological disorders are linked to the use of social media and the sharing of miraculous diets propagated online. Dietitians play a crucial role in counteracting eating disorders and guiding individuals towards healthy eating.
